Franklin Elementary School

Salt Lake City, Utah
Year Completed: 2000
Square Footage: 72,660
Client: Salt Lake City School District

The architectural design team worked closely with the district to make the school friendly for off-hour school use. The school was featured on KSL TV as a unique response to the community it serves. The community rallied to support the project during design and is a center of activity during and after school. The community watches out for the facility because it is a source of pride and respect. The new school building was constructed on an existing school site, but allowed the old building to remain occupied during the construction. There were many concerns during the design of this project. Soil studies indicated liquefaction problems leading the team to contact several seismic experts to find an adequate and economical solution to the lateral movements. A Vibro Compaction Soil Replacement System was done to mitigate liquefaction potential. By forming a partnership with the Salt Lake City School District and the community, we were able to not only meet their needs but were able to design a school that has a lasting contemporary feel for the life of the facility.
