SRI GANESHA Hindu Temple of Utah
South Jordan, Utah
Year Completed: 2003
Square Footage: 4,000
Client: India Culture Center Design Committee
The Temple shall be the fulfillment of a dream for Utah Hindus to have their own place of worship. In addition it will serve as a cultural forum for people of Indian origin in Utah. The motifs in the temple, including walls and towers, shall reflect the ancient temple architecture of India. It will be built on a four acre property recently acquired by the Temple in South Jordan.
The main shrine in the Temple will house the deity of Lord Ganesha. The tower structure above this shall project through the roof and reflect the architectural style of temples built in Northern India. Four other shrines in four corners of the main hall will house other divinities. An area for Yagna fire ceremonies with exhaust fan hood ventilating system will be included. Architectural embellishments and layout of the interior worship areas shall follow the prescribed laws of Hindu Temple design. The entrance gateway to the complex will rise tall and reflect the unique art and architecture of ancient Temple towers in Southern India. The shrines, the vimana, and the gopuram architecture will conform to Hindu Temple Architectural Codes, and will be verified with the Stapathis.
The Temple is located in the central East-West axis of the property meeting the Hindu Temple Architectural Codes called, Devalaya Vaastu. The building will face east, as per prescribed tradition wherein the rays of the rising sun falls on the main sanctum. Durable low-maintenance materials including masonry walls, concrete floor slabs, steel joists and metal deck will be used. The geotechnical investigation of this site will require two feet of compacted structural fill below the concrete spread footings. Landscaping and décor will incorporate the needs of the local area and also create the serene atmosphere of a place of worship and meditation.
