St. Alphonsus Hospital
Boise, Idaho
21 Year Relationship
The Campus Master Planning and facility began in 1990 and was most recently updated in 1998. The 1998 plan organized St. Alphonsus Hospital into a Regional Medical Center serving Boise and the surrounding area. Ideally located near downtown and with easy access to the rural communities via 1-84, the original hospital site on 14 acres grew through acquisitions to 29.6 acres. A Campus Drive provided convenient access from the east and west. All new and existing buildings and services were accessed from the Campus Drive. Completed projects in the plan were North Tower Phase I, Orthopedic Institute, Women’s and Children’s Services, Emergency Services Building, Outpatient Therapy Building (STAARS), and 2 Liberty Park Office Buildings.
The North Tower
The North Tower and Bridge combines the best qualities of a satellite facility and the comprehensive services of a hospital. Patients have easy access to the north tower while a bridge connects patient services to the main hospital. The Cancer Treatment Center located on the first floor provides comprehensive cancer services. A campus conference center occupies the second floor, complete with formal and break out rooms. It is located next to the Kissler Family Health Science Library. The Heart Center occupies the third, fourth and fifth floors.
Emergency Department
The Emergency Department renovation greatly increased the quality of space
through-out the facility, and the design moved the nursing station closer to patient rooms, which enabled the staff to provide better overall care and service. Through efficient design, the hospital was able to move more people more effectively through fewer rooms. This freed up space for an observation room to be included in the renovation. Another challenge was allowing the hospital to continue providing level 2 trauma services during actual construction time. “This renovation/remodel met the desires of the $5 million plan on a $3 million budget.”
Family Maternity Center
This was a four phase project that provides comprehensive services to women and children in the Greater Boise Area. Phase One consists of a 12-bed LDRP birthing center with a Level II nursery. The design encourages family participation in the birth based on the patients needs. Patients are greeted with a sky painted dome over the entry. Outdoor gardens and painted murals along walking paths provide private and comforting places for laboring to proceed under the watch of staff. Phase Two of the project is a 6 to 12 bed flexible pediatric unit. A street theme for the unit decreases anxiety and provides for education and relaxation with treatment. Phase Three is an outpatient clinic along with an education and comprehensive breast care center. Phase Four doubled the capacity of the birthing center.
